Letters To Parents

Dear Plashet students, parents and carers,

Happy New Year to you all.

We will be holding parent/carer/teacher meetings for all year groups this term. These will all be in person meetings held in school from 1.30 until 5.30pm.

We will continue to use the SchoolCloud platform for parents/carers to book meetings with their child’s teachers. Before your child’s parents/teacher meeting your child will bring home a letter with details of how to use the system and your pin code which will allow you to book your appointments.

All students will be dismissed at 12.30pm on each of the dates below to enable staff to conduct appointments with parents/carers. There will be food available at breaktime for all students, including those entitled to free school meals.
Year 11 Parent/Carer/Teacher meetings 17th January
Year 8 Parent/Carer/Teacher meetings 30th January
Year 10 Parent/Carer/Teacher meetings 22nd February
Year 9 Parents/Carer/Teacher meetings 13th March
Year 7 Parent/Carer/Teacher meetings 27th March

A reminder that parking outside Plashet School on Plashet Grove is prohibited and causes major disruption on a main thoroughfare.

I ask that those parents/carers who have been parking outside school please park more safely much further away so that everybody’s child is safe, not just their own, and that they do not impede other road users, local residents and most especially the emergency services.

To improve the safety, the Council has painted zig zag and yellow lines in specific areas outside the school. There should be no stopping or parking outside school between 8.00am and 5.00 Monday to Friday. Please show students good examples by obeying the rules.

Newham Council has a parking enforcement officer patrolling the area and issuing penalty notices to those drivers parking illegally.

I realise that there are some parents who have no alternative but to drive their children to school, however many are driving short distances where walking is a real option.

I do appreciate that most parents/carers walk, use public transport or drive responsibly to school and your cooperation is much appreciated.

Finally I would like to remind you all of Plashet’s Severe Weather Procedure which follows below.

I wish you and your family happiness and good health in 2024.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Rachel McGowan
Head Teacher
Plashet School

Severe Weather Procedure

As we are now in winter where poor weather is more likely to affect us, I would like to take this opportunity to outline for everyone the procedures we will follow when weather conditions are severe such as heavy snow and/or icy conditions.

The procedure in light of severe weather will be as follows.

At 7:00am on any day where weather looks like it could prevent us from opening, parents/carers will receive an email from Plashet informing you of one of five positions:

School Open as normal

School Open: Severe weather procedure in place

School Open: Years 10 & 11 ONLY

School Open: GCSE Examination Contingency Plan ONLY

School Closed due to severe weather

If the “School Open: Severe weather procedure in place” position is adopted, students should delay their journey into school, aiming to arrive at 9:45am. The day will then run as follows:

9.45am Registration

10.00 Lesson 1

10.45 Lesson 2

11.30 Lesson 3

12.30 Lunch

1:30 Lesson 4

2:30 School ends

If we are concerned about lunchtime safety, students will be instructed to remain in the building through these sessions, with staff on duty to ensure the safety of our students is maintained.

If the “School Open: Years 10 & 11 ONLY” position is adopted this means that only students in those year groups are to attend school. My decision to adopt this position will be driven by the number of staff who can safely get to school. KS4 students should delay their journey into school, aiming to arrive at 9:45am. The day will finish at 2.00pm, as lunch will be 30 minutes due to reduced numbers. Years 7, 8 & 9 will be set learning tasks via Google Classroom.

If there are timetabled examinations scheduled on a day when I have decided that the school should be closed to staff and students, the “School Open: GCSE Examination Contingency Plan ONLY” position will be adopted. In such an eventuality, the school will only be open to candidates sitting timetabled GCSE examinations. All candidates are expected to make the effort to come in and sit their examination.

If the weather is sufficiently bad that enough staff can not get to school for us to safely open and I make the decision to close the school all year groups will be set learning tasks via Google Classroom.

I will endeavor to keep the school open but the need may arise to send students home early should extreme weather arrive during the school day. In this eventuality, the school website will indicate “Emergency Closure due to severe weather”; we will email parents/carers to alert them and your daughter will bring home a letter with her outlining my decision. If, due to travel arrangements or issues regarding gaining access, students are unable to go home we will keep them at school until arrangements can be made.

In the event of severe weather, students should wear footwear appropriate to the conditions. This means footwear with good grip in snow or icing conditions or wellington boots or other suitable waterproof shoes.

We are so pleased to finally be able to share our fantastic Plashet 100 Exhibition with you.

The Exhibition

Behind the Scenes

It has really been a work of heart with our former student and current Governor, Meg Khan leading us on a very exciting journey of celebration.

Dear Plashet students, parents & carers,

The school day ends at 12.30pm on Wednesday 27th September as we hold our annual open evening for Year 6 families.

This also means there will be no lesson 6 for Year 11 on this day.

Parents and carers are asked to please ensure they know what time to expect their daughter and that she comes straight home from her early school finish and is not hanging around the High Street or Plashet Park.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs McGowan

Head Teacher
Plashet School

Our School will close at 12.30pm on the following dates:

Wednesday 8th March 2023 – Year 9
Thursday 23rd March 2023 – Year 7

Dear Plashet students, parents and carers,

Tomorrow, Wednesday 14th December, is a normal school day.

Students should arrive at school for 8.45am and will leave at the normal time of 3.35pm.

Given pavements in the local area remain icy students are permitted to wear footwear with good grip such as trainers, wellingtons or boots.

With warm regards,

Mrs Rachel McGowan
Head Teacher
Plashet School

Today, Mrs McGowan was accompanied by three of our Student Leadership Team to sign the Book of Condolence at East Ham Library.

Zhara, our Head Girl, and Isha and Tara, both Deputy Head Girls signed on behalf of all the students at Plashet School.

It is our sincere hope that you are able to find a moment of quiet reflection on the upcoming Bank Holiday on Monday 19th September.

Dear students, parents and carers,

The news this evening that Queen Elizabeth II has passed away is extremely sad and I am sure that your thoughts and prayers like mine are with her family at this difficult time.

However, Plashet is open tomorrow.

All students are expected to be in school for registration as normal.

When Buckingham Palace announces details of her majesty’s state funeral we will know more about whether schools will close as a mark of respect. This decision will be taken at a national level. I will update you all once I know more.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs McGowan
Headteacher

We will be closing at 12.30 pm on Tuesday 19th July 2022 and opening again on Monday 5th September 2022.

All students are aware that they can wear non-uniform on Tuesday 19th July and that £1 contributions to our charity drive for Great Ormond Street Hospital, Rewilding Britain and Supporting Humanity can be made between Monday 11th July and Monday 18th July via our online payment portal, ParentMail.

We wish all our students and their families a restful break and look forward to seeing Years 7 to 11 on site again on Monday 5th September.

Current Year 11 will be on site for GCSE Results Day on Thursday 25th August.

Cashless Catering

We are introducing a cashless payment system with Online Payments using IRIS ParentMail. You can use Online Payments to pay for school lunches, school educational visits, textbooks/revision guides you may wish to purchase and other items using your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

With Online Payments you can:
Top up your daughter’s lunch money account electronically using credit or debit cards, PayPal, or PayPoint.
Receive automatic reminders when your daughter’s lunch money account balance is running low.

If you have an Android or Apple smartphone, we recommend you download the free IRIS ParentMail App so you can make payments on the go. Just search for IRIS ParentMail in your App store.

We would like you to logon to ParentMail and deposit some money on the account for your child before half term holidays.

In order to ensure a smooth transition to cashless catering, each year will move to cashless catering as per the schedule below:

  • Monday 1st November: Year 10
  • Monday 8th November: Years 9 & 11
  • Monday 15th November: Years 7 & 8

You will need to be registered with IRIS ParentMail and have lunch money deposited beforehand to enable your daughter to pay for school lunches. If your daughter receives free school meals she will receive a daily allowance to enable her to obtain her lunch using the same cashless system.

Your bank statement will display either the school name or IRIS ParentMail, depending on your payment method. If you need any additional information or assistance, please visit our help centre www.parentmail.co.uk/help/parenthelp/

Please see the ‘Parent Welcome Pack’ here which will guide you to logging on to your account and resetting passwords.

Those parents/carers who have logged on/downloaded ParentMail in the past please make sure you are still able to login. If you have forgotten your password the attached pack will guide you on how to reset this.

For those parents/carers who have never used ParentMail, you will have received an email with your registration link on Friday 24th September 2021. Please follow the attached guide to help get you started.

If you have not received the email from ParentMail on Friday please check your Spam/Junk folder in your email. Note this email will only be for new registrations not existing users.

If you have not received a registration email and you have checked that it is not in your Spam/Junk mailbox, please email: cashless@plashet.newham.sch.uk with your child’s Full name and form group along with your name and relationship to the child i.e. Mum/Dad with your mobile number. Plashet administrative staff will then check to see if your email address is registered with us and if not update this and resend the verification email.

Any queries should be directed to the School’s Business Manager, Mr S Heys.

Open Evening on Tuesday 12th October is cancelled inline with our Covid-19 Risk Assessment.
