Plashet Update 31.12.20

Dear Plashet parents, carers and girls,

The Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson, yesterday announced new plans to protect education and fight the virus. With case and death rates rising across the country, the government is now applying the contingency framework for education and pushing back the staggered return for secondary schools by one week.

This is how the next few weeks will work at Plashet:

1. Learning will take place online for all year groups in the week beginning Monday 4th January. Students should follow their timetables (it is a Week B) and log-on to Google Classroom. If students are not interacting with online lesson resources and not completing what is expected, parents/carers will be contacted.

2. In the week beginning Monday 11th January, students in Year 11 will be required to attend school as usual. Years 7 to 10 will have a second week of online learning.

3. School will resume as normal for all year groups on Monday 18th January 2021. However, this is subject to review of the Contingency Framework by the government which will happen, I am told, prior to 18th January.

4. We will have a small amount of on-site provision in operation for some eligible students if their parents/carers wish them to be in school because they can not be safely cared for at home. This on-site provision will be for those students who have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), those students who are looked after, those students who have a designated social worker and any student who has a parent who is a key worker that can not safely study at home. If your daughter is in any of these categories please email info@plashet.newham.sch.uk by Friday 1st January at the latest to request an on-site place. It is important that you state what your job is and who you work for please if you are a key worker.

5. For all students in receipt of free school meals we will issue a evoucher for the week beginning Monday 4th January via our provider Wonde to parents as we have done previously. For those students in Years 7 to 10 another voucher will be issued for the week beginning 11th January.

It is worth emphasising that these decisions follow on from the latest government guidance. This remains subject to change at very short notice, and so these are in effect provisional arrangements. If there are any further changes I will update you.

I wish you all a safe end to 2020 and feel we must all look forward into 2021 with hope and positivity.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Rachel McGowan

Welcome to the final update of the Autumn Term 2020.

As I am sure you will have heard through the media, the government has announced the requirement for secondary schools to implement a staggered start to the Spring Term in January 2021.

As a result, the following arrangements will be put in place with effect from Monday 4th January 2021:

  1. Year 11 will be required to attend school as normal. At the end of term Year 11 girls all took home testing swab kits to administer on either 31st December or 1st January to ensure no-one comes back to school with COVID-19.
  2. Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be taught online via Google Classroom. Please note that registers will be taken daily at 9.00am and for each lesson. Your daughter will be following her normal school timetable. Monday 4th January is a Week B.
  3. We will have on-site provision in operation for some eligible students if their parents/carers wish them to be in school. This on-site provision will be for those students who have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), those students who are looked after, those students who have a designated social worker and any student who has a parent who is a key worker that can not safely study at home. If your daughter is in any of these categories please email info@plashet.newham.sch.uk by Wednesday 30th December at the latest to request an on-site place.
  4. For those students in receipt of free school meals we will issue a evoucher for the week beginning Monday 4th January via our provider Wonde to parents as we have done previously.
  5. With respect to COVID testing in school, I am awaiting further information from Public Health colleagues at the London Borough of Newham. I do know that this is unlikely to commence before Monday 11th January and I will update you when I know more.

Currently the Government is intent on schools resuming as normal for all year groups on Monday 11th January 2021. I will send another email update as and when more information is made available to me.

Thank you for your support of the school during this very difficult and uncertain time. On behalf of the staff and governors may I wish you and your families a restful and safe holiday.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Rachel McGowan

Thankfully all water related issues have been resolved on site, therefore Years 7 & 8 will return for the last day of the term on Thursday 17th December (tomorrow).

A polite reminder to all parents and carers that we have slightly different finishing times tomorrow too:

– Year 7 leave at 12 noon
– Year 8 leave at 12.15pm
– Year 9 leave at 12.30pm
– Year 10 leave at 12.15pm
– Year 11 leave at 12.30pm

Unfortunately our water issue has not yet been resolved and we do not have a fully functioning water supply to the South Annex building.

This means that school is closed for Years 7 & 8 tomorrow – Wednesday 16th December.
Year 7 & 8 lessons will be provided using Google Classroom.
All students should be logged-on by 09.00am please.

I will update parents and carers again during Wednesday 16th December about whether Years 7 & 8 are able to come to school on Thursday 17th December for their final half-day of the year.

Please do not phone school but wait for the email communication.

Again I apologise for this inconvenience and be assured I am working to get it resolved.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Rachel McGowan

Newham have launched their latest brochure, which is designed to support students in Year 11 and below with their Post-16 options for 2021 entry.

The brochure highlights the full range of post-16 options available in Newham, including Apprenticeships.

It contains useful information about making post-16 choices, information about the offer from all the 16-19 institutions in Newham, and case studies from students talking about their experiences of 16-19 study and progression to higher education.

Plashet Letter September 2020 Return

All Parents Email Update 07.07.20

Dear Parents and Carers,

The long awaited guidance from the government regarding the full reopening of schools in September for all students was published last Thursday morning. Since that time the school has been interpreting the guidance and we are putting plans in place for a full reopening from the start of the Autumn Term.

We will be communicating our plans to you before term ends on 17th July, but suffice to say that school will be operating in a very different way from September onwards for the foreseeable future and this will require every member of our community to play their part in ensuring that we operate in a safe and purposeful way.

Currently we are:

– Amending our detailed Risk Assessment of the school site to take into account the increased number of staff and students required to be on site from the start of next term
– Evaluating a number of different organisational models to ensure that the full timetable can be delivered in a safe way and that is compliant with the government guidance.

Our email updates and website will be important sources of information between now and the end of term but also throughout the summer break as the situation is changing rapidly.

Please be aware that all girls are expected to attend school from September 2020. The government has made it clear that schools will be expected to issue Fixed Penalty Fines to the parents of pupils who are not attending.

We know that some families will be considering travelling abroad for holidays over the summer break and we want to remind you to ensure that you have returned to the UK with enough time to complete the 14-day quarantine that could well be required. If your daughter is starting in Year 7 their first school day is Thursday 3rd of September 2020 so they would need to be back in the UK by Thursday 20th August 2020. For all other year groups, the first day is Monday 7th September 2020 and they would need to be back in the UK by Friday 21st August 2020.

Thank you in advance for your support at this challenging time.

Yours faithfully,

Rachel McGowan

Year 7, 8 & 9 Parental Email 26.06.20

Dear Plashet Parent/Carer,

Our phased reopening for Year 10 has started this week and all new systems have been a resounding success for those staff and students attending. We now look to September and a wider opening of our provision. At the time of writing, the government has not given any precise details other than their ambition to have all children back at school. I hope to be able to write to you in next week’s update about more specific details for the Autumn Term if the government publishes their plans.

The government has also announced funding for ‘catch-up’ (not a phrase I would use) but again there is very little precise detail about this. Once this is known, I will of course inform you of our plans.

I am pleased to announce that we are fully staffed with teachers for September. We have made successful appointments in Science, Languages and Design & Technology. Some of these are new posts arising from our ongoing school expansion – we have one further year before we have 300 girls in each year group. I do not lie when I tell you how much people want to work at Plashet. Even when we do online virtual interviews and they haven’t visited the school, they invariably talk about the good reputation that we have in the community. That is down to our wonderful, hard working girls and I am most grateful.

Friday 17th July is the last day of this academic year and just three weeks away. Before we break for the summer holiday we will be providing bridging work to support students as they move from either Year 7 to Year 8, Year 8 to Year 9 or Year 9 into Year 10. More details will follow about this in a couple of week’s time.

Best wishes for a good weekend and hopefully some more bearable temperatures.

Year 10 Parental Email 26.06.20

Dear Plashet Parent/Carer,

Our phased reopening for Year 10 has started this week and all new systems have been a resounding success for those staff and students attending. My thanks to all those parents who have shown faith in Plashet for your support in sending your daughter’s back to school. We look forward to welcoming more Year 10 students back next week as this is a good opportunity to reconnect with three important core subjects in which all students will face exams next summer.

We now look to September and a wider opening of our provision. At the time of writing, the government has not given any precise details other than their ambition to have all children back at school. The government has also announced funding for ‘catch-up’ (not a phrase I would use), but again there is very little precise detail about this. Once this is known, I will of course inform you of our plans.

The same goes for next summer’s GCSE examinations – the government has announced that it will be holding a consultation about this issue. Currently, we must assume that these examinations will go ahead as they have in the past and current Year 10 students must continue to make the most of their online learning and face-to-face support over the next three weeks. If there are changes, I will of course inform you at the earliest possible opportunity.
