Catering
We have two canteens on our split site, one of which was built in 2017 as part of the construction of a new annex to the South Building. This dedicated facility is large, warm and well lit with acoustic ceiling panels installed to reduce sound interference and enable social conversation between diners. The full height curtain walling around the canteen maximises the natural light within the room and diners can look out onto the piazza to see the large numbers of students socialising in that area, as well as the newly installed SUD’s planters which bring an element of nature into the area.
In our North Building multi-use canteen facility, duty staff and canteen staff go a long way to ensuring a welcoming and attractive eating environment. Queues are orderly and well managed, ensuring students can be confident of being served in a fair and timely fashion. Our long serving canteen staff are valued and respected members of our community and their friendly and caring behaviour towards the students is appreciated by many.
Students in Years 7 and 8 eat their lunch in the North Building and they take it in turns to have first, or second sitting for their meals. Students collect their hot meal on a tray and collect cutlery and a water cup for the free drinking water that is available on every table. All students take responsibility for clearing their area when they are finished and they remove unwanted food from plates/bowls; place cutlery, crockery and plastic cups in the correct area.
Students in Years 9 - 11 also have a rota of who goes first, second and third for each lunch service. They also manage their own trays and tidying up. We run a slightly different timetable for our popular Tuesday offer of fish or chicken and chips, whereby our students in one year group have an early lunch and are taught either Maths or Science when the other two year groups are eating, allowing us to reduce waiting times and serve everyone who wishes to eat a hot lunch.
Our catering staff are constantly engaged in a rota of daily and deep clean tasks to ensure that both kitchens meet hygiene standards and the correct health and safety procedures are adhered to by all staff. Our kitchens are regularly audited and issues are rectified to ensure that the highest standards are maintained. In addition to the audits undertaken by the private contractor responsible for our catering service, the school continues to pay the local authority to conduct a bi-annual inspection of the canteens. The school has an established service level agreement for pest control and separate refuse areas and regular refuse collections.
Our most recent Food Hygiene rating was 5 (out of 5)
All of our meat is Halal and is sourced appropriately by our sub-contracted catering provider.
