Introduction to Art & Design

The aim of the Art department at Plashet School is to foster an ethos of excellence and achievement through creative thought and enquiry. We encourage all students to be confident artists, where they take risks and use their creativity and imagination to develop ideas through recording and experimentation with materials.

The study of the work of both classical and contemporary artists and cultures from around the world is integral to all units of work where students are able to give their own opinions and develop a critical and contextual understanding of the art world and understand how this applies to their current working practice.

Awareness of the importance and purpose of art, the transferable skills and the careers and opportunities studying Art can lead to are integral to the curriculum.

KS3

Throughout KS3, students are taught to use a wide range of different media and techniques, in order to develop an in-depth understanding of the subject area. This also serves as a foundation for GCSE Art at KS4.

Students work to develop their knowledge of the formal elements of Art, through the use of drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D sculpture, photography, film and technology.  They study different genres and art movements, develop technical skills and are encouraged to explore their own personal ideas and interests, to create original responses to set themes.

In Year 9 students take part in a gallery/location visit and workshops with artists, universities and galleries. These are an important part of the course and enable students to develop an understanding of art and design in the world around them and to record from direct experience. Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other and exhibit their work at Art Matters.

Exam board and Syllabus: Edexcel Art and Design (Fine Art) (1AD0) & (Art, Craft and Design (1ACD0)

All KS4 students will have opportunities to go on trips to galleries or participate in artist workshops to support their studies, forming an important part of our curriculum. We have regular weekly Art clubs and Interventions, where students are supported to complete class work and home study and are encouraged to try out and experiment with new materials and ways of working. Teaching is highly personalised and students are encouraged to confidently create ambitious outcomes, explore their own personal ideas and interests in order to create original responses to set themes.

There are opportunities for those students interested in pursuing Art and Design further, with the University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion and the University of East London. We have excellent partnerships with these establishments and send many of our students to participate in their Saturday programmes.
